THIS week, we report with some satisfaction the achievement of the target set by our Heart of Durham Appeal. In barely six months, the city has raised almost £50,000 to buy an extra heart scanner for the University Hospital of North Durham.
Why did the Durham Times back this cause? There are, after all, many good causes the newspaper could have given its support to.
What impressed us was the nature of the appeal; it was for something very tangible that the people of Durham could benefit from immediately. It will cut the waiting time for a heart scan from four-and-a-half weeks to three weeks. It also tackles a medical issue which is particularly pertinent in the Durham area – a higher than average rate of heart disease.
We were also confident that the people of Durham would support it, and they certainly have, from last year’s Mayor, Dennis Southwell, to those who attended coffee mornings at Merry Oaks WI, or took part in sponsored activities.
The Durham Times would like to thank everyone who made the appeal such a success and we look forward to the scanner’s purchase and making a difference to the treatment of heart disease in the city and district.
We are also open to approaches from other organisations.
Do readers know of other cause which deserve our support in the same way? We would like to hear of them.
