Sir, – Trish Johnston of the Durham Labour Party (Durham Times, January 29) is rewriting history when she claims that the official referendum in 2004 “showed a significant majority in favour of a unitary council”.

Sir, – In response to the views of Coun Southwell’s quotes regarding Statue-gate, I am confused by the strength of his statements: “Where is democracy, it is the death of democracy for Durham. We have had thousands of people who have signed petitions.”

Sir, – As your readers are aware the Durham Taxpayers Alliance is a registered political party. However, it does not put canditates up for election in general elections. although it could do so. It concentrates on local issues for the people of Durham. I have been following the major political parties carefully, and come to the following conclusion.

Sir, – I used to live in Sacriston and I attended school at nearby Edmondsley from 1952 until 1962 I would like to know if anyone has any information or pictures of the old school or if anyone knows where I might look.

Sir, – I read the letter of JD Whittaker (January 15) with interest. I would agree that we need “clean” policies and politics but he is wearing blinkers.
