Poppy snub

Sir, – I wish to comment on the attitude of a local shopping area to the 2009 Poppy Appeal.

On Saturday, I assisted with the appeal in Durham Market Place. I am a former submariner and strongly support the work of the Royal British Legion. Their work is especially important at the present time with the deaths and severe injuries being sustained by the Armed Forces.

Army and Air Force cadets assisted on Saturday and went out from the Market Place with boxes of poppies and collecting tins.

One pair ventured into High Street in the Prince Bishops shopping area and were promptly told to leave by the staff there. It would appear that this is something the centre does not wish to go along with.

I have mentioned this to others and they all have expressed disgust at the attitude of the management who should give an apology and change their rules.
