Sir, – It seems like the Lord Londonderry statue is the latest in the line of dead horses the public have been flogging when trying to get the inept planning committee and other councillors to listen to the opinions of the people.

Unfortunately, the beautiful setting of the church and the Town Hall as a back drop for photographs of the statue showing off our historic city has ended.

Instead, we will be sending people back around the world to show off our majestic statue with the true mark of civilisation in the background. Tesco.

The founder of Tesco, Sir Jack Cohen, had a saying: “Build it high and sell it cheap.”

I am sure he will rest easy knowing the planning committee at Durham County Council are following his edict in this and many other of their decisions.

We need more space in the market for more stall holders, who cant afford the rents for the shops, and for entertainment events, which could not possibly take place in our derelict cinemas, and for other cultural events, which we can’t use Palace Green or the racecourse for.

We need to modernise this decrepid old city. Instead of having lights portraying pictures on the cathedral, we should commission an artist to express himself on the walls, with paint. Or better still lets knock the old building down and have a dome which could be used for everything.

Don’t laugh, its all possible with the deaf, dumb and blind monkeys we have running our county council.

PS Now that I have seen the list of councillors who voted for the changes to our beautiful city. I can see why they voted the way they did. This is because six out of the eight live so far away from Durham they have no idea what the impact will have on the “real”

people of Durham and just did as they were told by their superiors.
