Sir, – My name is Ian Ferguson and I am a recently retired firefighter from the Durham County Brigade. I served almost 35 years and retired as a watch manager in 2008.
I was wondering if the Durham Times would be interested in helping me to publicise a retired firefighters network I have recently started.
Since retiring, I quickly realised that there wasn’t anything available for retired firefighters to keep them informed as to what is happening within the service and keep them in touch with old colleagues, so I decided to do something about that and have set up the Durham Old Boys Network, specifically for the retired members of the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
This is open to everyone who has worked in the fire service, either as a firefighter or in a civilian role.
The purpose of the network is to inform the retired staff of such things as news from the service, ie new appliances, retirement functions coming up or sadly the death of a former colleague and basically it is to draw the retired members back into the fold and help them to feel part of the family again.
I have made contact with the service and they have expressed a wish to support the venture and are now feeding information into us and, by email, I am keeping everyone informed.
Since starting the network, it has taken off to such an extent that I now have more than 100 names covering fire fighters from at least three brigades and we have members being kept informed who live in New Zealand, Dubai, Africa and and many parts of the UK.
However, there are many retired firefighters still to find and I would like to ask if you would be prepared to do an article on the group to help promote it.
You can contact me via email on ianferg@btinternet.com or call 07932-004401 (mobile) or via the website I have set up on www.durhamoldboysnetwork.org.uk.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and if I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.
