From the Durham County Advertiser 50 years ago: Durham City and District Chamber of Trade are to revive Shopping Week.
At the annual meeting it was decided by two votes to organise it in Regatta Week, June 26 to July 1.
There is a possibility, however, that on Wednesday, June 26, the day on which many visitors flock into the city, the shops will be closed in the afternoon, so that staff may have their traditional holiday.
“If we do close, the visitors will have to be content with window shopping, and perhaps they will come back on the Thursday,” said one member. The matter of the half-day holiday will be decided by a sub-committee.
In moving that a Shopping Week be held this year, Coun JC Williamson said he felt that Shopping Week and Regatta Week could be “married”.
This would provide the Chamber with an opportunity to show people who came to Durham for the first time that Durham had a shopping centre.
