From the Durham Advertiser 50 years ago.

Saddler Street improvement scheme, Durham, a project that has suffered a number of setbacks since it was first mooted in the summer of 1960, will probably be completed by September this year.

The chairman of the City Planning Committee, Ald G McIntyre, has promised that the City Council will give all assistance and encouragement to participants in the scheme.

Ald McIntyre, who was talking to a meeting of interested parties, told the meeting that the Council had seen the full proposals of the co-ordinating architect, Mr D McIntyre, and expressed the hope that everyone in Saddler Street would co-operate to the full, to carry out the scheme. During the next day or two, tenants and owners of the properties affected by the proposals will receive letters from the Town Clerk explaining in detail how the implementation of the scheme will affect their properties. In most cases the use of a recommended colour scheme in redecorating will be suggested but in a number of cases some minor repairs and alterations will be called for.
