Your turn to make a difference

2:51pm Friday 23rd July 2010

IT HAS been very gratifying to receive a large number of requests recently for help and advice on how to make gardens and open spaces more wildlife friendly. Durham Wildlife Trust has had enquiries from householders about hedgehog boxes, accountants wanting to make their business premises more biodiverse (must be tax deductible) and schools wanting to create gardens in their grounds. I only wish the Trust had the resources to fully support each request, because if every garden and open space was managed just a little more sympathetically it would make a tremendous difference for wildlife.

Winter white in the heat of summer

ERMINE is the name given to the white winter coat of the stoat, so it is not something that you would expect to see in summer. However, there is also ermine to be found in the insect world, and summer is the time of year when the insect version of ermine becomes most obvious.

Life in abundance wherever you look

3:36pm Friday 2nd July 2010

I HAVE been sitting pondering what to write about and nothing in particular comes to mind. This isn’t really the time of year for the out of the ordinary to turn up. Birds are not on migration, so there are no lost rarities to mention.

Buttercups, buttercups, all in the sun

WE TAKE many of our wildflowers for granted, not sparing a moment to stop and look.

Bugs, bees, beetles and butterflies

THE sun may be lacking so far this summer, but the insects have not been deterred.

A short tale about horsetails

HORSETAILS are a fascinating group of plants that are very visible at this time of year.

Spring is over sooner than you think

ALTHOUGH, from the human perspective at least, the winter has not long finished, for many of our birds the serious business of spring, the raising of the next generation, is almost over.

Warm weather brings feast of flowers

5:30pm Friday 21st May 2010

AT LAST it is getting warmer and the natural world is accelerating into life. Trees are in leaf, butterflies are increasing in number and variety and there are some spectacular displays of wildflowers.

Should I feed the birds in summer?

12:03pm Friday 14th May 2010

IT USED to be considered unnecessary to feed the birds in the spring and summer, with only winter feeding felt to be required.

Time to Paws for thought

1:36pm Friday 7th May 2010

NATURE conservation is plagued by acronyms. Until recently, there were four different ones for a particular type of site designation, which, with uncharacteristic efficiency for officialdom, have now been amalgamated into one.
