We should be proud to get rid of the bag
THE plastic carrier bag
has been a wonderful
thing - a simple
cheap and flexible
method of carrying a
wide range of objects.
But its very popularity has
made it a pariah in the environment.
There is scarcely a
corner of this land which does
not have a discarded, mucky,
tatty example scarring the
landscape.
The nature of their lightweight
shape means they can be
blown absolutely anywhere
and everywhere.
Government in this country
has been slow to act to curb
the fly-blown menace, unlike
other countries, notably Ireland,
which has banned stores
from giving away free bags. So
that means local initiatives,
like the Durham Bag Reduction
Partnership, should be encouraged
and applauded.
The rather grandly-titled
Durham Agreement signed
this week is the city's first step
towards making a difference.
The Co-op and Vision Express
deserve great credit for being
the first retailers in the city to
sign up. We hope many others
follow their example for these
are small beginnings indeed.
We look forward to seeing the
first re-usable Durham shopping
bag - with its logo designed
by local schoolchildren
- on sale in September and
trust this becomes an environmental
"badge of honour" to
be carried with price by the
city's shoppers
