Slim hope – but hope
THOSE Durham City, Derwentside
and Chester-le-Street
communities facing the loss of
their local post office under the
proposals announced by the
Post Office this week might be
excused for accepting the proposal
as decision taken.
The consultation process has
been so devalued elsewhere
that it might hardly seem
worth making much of a fuss
about the loss of another community
asset.
But protest they must, because
there is always a chance that
the Post Office might change
its mind. It did once, earlier
this year, in Harrogate, North
Yorkshire, where one post office
was reprieved (although its
place on the closure list was
taken by another).
This might seem to represent a
slim hope but post office users
should do whatever they can,
together with sub-postmasters,
to make the case for keeping a
branch open.
The consultation process may
be flawed, it may be virtually
worthless in most instances
but we cannot turn our back
on it.
