| Putting the buzz in buzzards | | 2:37pm Friday 26th September 2008 | |
LAST week saw a large number of
sightings of honey buzzards (pernis
apivorus) over County
Durham. Honey buzzards are a
scarce bird in the UK but across
Europe honey buzzards are one of
the most common birds of prey. |
| Why do leaves fall in autumn? | | 2:08pm Friday 19th September 2008 | |
AUTUMN is here, but unfortunately
this year we had very little summer
preceding it. The obvious
changes between the seasons are
apparent, with the temperature
dropping, particularly at night, and
the days are drawing in. |
| How the rain affects wildlife | | 4:07pm Friday 12th September 2008 | | MANY species of butterfly,
including
some of the most
common, are reported
to be down
in number. |
| In search of a monster lobster | | 1:22pm Friday 5th September 2008 | |
ALL along the rocky sections
of the Durham
coast the common lobster
(homarus gammarus)
can be found in
nooks and crannies below the
water line. |
| Migrant godwits spotted over Durham | | 2:12pm Friday 29th August 2008 | |
BLACK-TAILED godwits
were recorded at
Durham Wildlife
Trust's Rainton Meadows
nature reserve this
bank holiday weekend. |
| Have you seen a butterfly flutter by? | | 1:34pm Friday 22nd August 2008 | |
HAVE you seen many butterflies
this summer? It is always risky to
accept anecdotal evidence, and I
don't know if the official counts
will bear this out, but the Wildlife
Trust has had reports from concerned
members about a lack of
butterflies. |
| The best time for dragonflies | | 2:51pm Friday 15th August 2008 | |
AUGUST can be a quiet time for
wildlife, with many plant species
having flowered and set seed and
bird breeding season drawing to a
close. |
| A guide to the stars of the shore | | 2:16pm Friday 8th August 2008 | |
WHEN the tide goes out, rock
pools become a self-contained
world of their own, a free entry zoo
of marine life and one of the stars
of the show is the crab. But which
crab is it? |
| Let’s keep Durham beautiful | | 11:54am Friday 1st August 2008 | |
THE summer holidays have begun
and the weather, at the time of
writing at least, is good enough to
encourage people to get out and
enjoy the countryside and coast. |
| Black, red and spotted all over | | 12:10pm Friday 25th July 2008 | |
AT this time of year, keep an eye out
for a striking red and black moth,
which is a lot easier to see than
most other moths as it is day flying. |
