A NEW church and family centre was opened at the weekend.

The £200,000 facility in High Street North, Langley Moor, is the first Salvation Army building in the UK to include a purpose-built children's play area.

The area, called The Boyne Play Pit, will has a theme celebrating the celebrate the community's coal mining heritage.

The Beamish Museum has forged links with the centre and is planning to run education courses with the Salvation Army.

The facility serving the communities of Langley Moor and Brandon, was opened by Salvation Army northern divisional leaders, Majors Melvin and Suzanne Fincham.

The day included a variety of activities including face painting and a children's entertainer.

Since the centre opened its doors a few weeks ago, more than 30 children and their parents have enjoyed the facilities, including a cafe, flat screen TVs and family worship on Sunday, including a communal meal.

MajorsMeshielBrown,who runs the church centre with Major David Brown, said: "We havebeeninLangleyMoorfor six years and came with a vision that one day The Salvation Army would be able to reach out to families with a facility like this.

"When we first came we were holding worship and bible study from either our home or fellow Christians.

"Now we have a brightly decorated building which is starting to thrive."
