From the Durham County Advertiser 50 years ago: In the next five years, the population of Belmont and Carrville is expected to soar beyond 7,000. This is nearly double the present figure and approaching three times the 1951 census figure.
Since the end of the war, more than 1,000 houses have been built by Durham Rural Council and private builders. They are inundated.
Already, land has been cleared for 600 more houses.
Have the local churches benefited by the influx of people into the neighbourhood?
Both Methodists and Church of England people are optimistic about the future of growing congregations in the district. At present, the parish is without a vicar. It is about a year since the Rev ENO Gray left and there is no news of a new appointment.
Canon KJ Meux, who has taken the parish under his wing, reports that congregations are satisfactory but is unable to report an increase.
