From the Durham County Advertiser 50 years ago: MEMBERS of the Durham Diocesan Moral Welfare Association were informed by their chairman, Canon J Norwood, that they had been overspending for several years.
He said: “It is highly likely that our expenditure will considerably increase and unless something is done this year an emergency meeting might have to be called to discuss the possibility of closing down the work.”
At the annual meeting of the Association in Alington House on Tuesday, Canon Norwood pointed out that the “ordinary income was not coming within a measurable distance of the expenditure which we shall have to meet.
We will also have to meet the long overdue increases.
Living under these terms is not fair to those people who are employed by the branches and something must be planned now to meet the changing circumstances that are coming about in moral welfare work.”
He added: “There might be another meeting later in the year to bridge the gap between income and expenditure.”
