There is now a firm possibility that a University Theatre may be built in Durham. The Council of the Colleges at its meeting on Tuesday accepted a report by the Building Development Committee which has been carrying out preliminary inquiries.

The County Council immediately demonstrated its interest. The Director of Education, Mr George Metcalfe, said that they warmly welcomed the project.

It is emphasised that the proposal is still in its earliest stages and if the Colleges do decide to proceed, it is unlikely that the theatre will be started in less than five years time.

The Building and Development Committee has framed an outline project in order that a theatre could be fitted into the programme in about five years’ time if it were decided to go ahead.

A theatre designer who is in the South of England has been recommended for consultation. But the question of a possible site has not been decided.

The prospect of building opposite Shire Hall has been discussed, but the University does not own that property yet, as the deal with the County Council has not been completed.
