Choir needed for mysteries opera

A COMMUNITY opera is to be performed in Durham Cathedral as part of plans to reevive the medieval tradition of street plays based on Bible stories.

Singers of all ages and abilities are invited to join a large amateur choir for The Fall of Creation, one of ten productions which will make up the Durham Mysteries in late May.

A taster singing workshop will take place at the Gala Theatre, Durham, on Tuesday, March 16, from 6-8pm.

Rehearsals will be held in April and May.

The opera will recount the story of Satan descending from heaven to appear as a serpent in the Garden of Eden story of Adam and Eve.

Professional soprano Emily Smith will play the part of Eve and baritone David Pisaro will be Satan. Music has been composed by Tim Brooks, stage design is by Lyn Wait and the director is Em Whitfield Brooks.

Ms Whitfield Brooks said: “You don’t have to be professional to get involved. We are looking for people of all ages and levels of ability to take part in the production.

Whether you are an individual, a choir or keen on singing in any way, we want to hear from you.

“The Fall of Creation will be visually spectacular as well as musically striking.”

Performers will be invited to have a hand in designing and making their own costumes.

Gala Theatre director Simon Stallworthy said: “We want anyone who would like a performing role in the Durham Mysteries to be able to, and this is a fantastic opportunity not only to work with some of the best creative talents in the industry today, but to be part of a ground-breaking production.”

Kate James, creative programmer for Durham’s City of Culture bid, said: “We’re looking for people with enthusiasm and passion to make the Durham Mysteries a spectacular event for participants and audiences.”
