MP Since - 2001 Majority - 16,781 Born - 25/04/1964.

Education - Portland Comprehensive School, Worksop. Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic. University of Southern Maine, Portland, USA.

Previous Occupation - Northern Region Political Officer (1989-2001) and Senior Organiser (1999-2001) for the GMB.

Personal Overview - Succeeded Giles Radice in this very safe Labour seat at the 2001 General Election, which should ensure a long parliamentary career if he wishes it. From a traditional Labour background of Trade Union involvement and Local Government politics. He is a long serving Councillor, who has held several senior positions in Newcastle Upon Tyne City Council. Interests include Employment law, as well as previously campaigning on 'asbestos awareness'.

Education - University of Ulster (BSc and PhD Social Science).

Previous Occupation - Professor of Social Policy and an Associate Dean, University of Northumbria. Former Dean of Labour Studies at Ruskin College, Oxford and Head of the Local Government Information Unit.

Personal Overview - Politically experienced academic who entered Parliament at her first attempt, having been selected for the Labour stronghold of Durham. As a former Chair of the local constituency party she is well connected in the area, having lived locally for many years. Probably too old to gain ministerial preferment , although was made a PPS, she is likely to figure more strongly on the Committee corridor having a wealth of social policy experience to draw upon.
