Textiles exhibition opens today

A TEXTILES exhibition inspired by a Japan, China and Egypt opens today.

Members of the Durham Embroiderers Guild took their inspiration from the Chinese, Japanese and Egyptian collections of the Oriental Museum, in Durham.

Their work will be showcased in the museum, on Elvet Hill, until June 9.

More than 40 embroiderers from all over County Durham have contributed.

The exhibition celebrates the work of the guild in conserving the museum's textile collection.

Museum curator Craig Barclay said: "The museum has a great relationship with the guild. We have worked together for almost ten years, and last year we held a refresher course to keep their textile conservation skills updated.

"Guild members do a marvellous job in coming in regularly to help preserve the huge range of delicate textiles we have here at the museum."

Guild chairwoman Melita Butterell said: "Guild members were given free access to the museum and chose very varied pieces for their inspiration.

"They have interpreted these pieces in an amazing variety of ways and the exhibition has something for everyone."

The museum is open 10am to 5pm weekdays and noon to 5pm on weekends. Admission is £1.50 for adults and 75p for concessions.
