| PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION: Wood turner Chris Helliwell demonstrates his art to visitors at the Botanic Gardens in Durham |
VISITORS to Durham
Botanic Garden had the
chance to see a demonstration
of green-powered
woodworking in action.
Woodworker Chris Helliwell
showed traditional
methods using tools that
were used before the discovery
and harnessing of
electricity.
He demonstrated a pole
lathe and shave horse and
gave his audience the
chance to have a go themselves.
The event was funded by
the garden's friends organisation.
The garden, in
Hollingside Lane, South
Road, is run by Durham
University.
Michael Hughes, of the
Botanic Garden, said:
"Chris has been coming to
the garden for a number of
years now and is popular
with visitors.
"A pole lathe, the traditional
tool of a wood
bodger, requires no power
other than that of your leg
and a sprung pole.''
