‘Students are causing more trouble than ever’
DURHAM University students
are causing more bother
for people living in the city
than at any time for years, a
councillor has claimed.
Coun Jeffrey Young, who
represents Crossgate and
Framwelgate, made the comments
at Durham City Council
licensing committee
meeting on Wednesday.
He said: "I cannot remember
when it has been as bad
as it has been this year for the
noise and carry on in the
early hours of the morning in
residential areas."
The criticism came as residents
spoke out about rubbish
piled in the streets by
students leaving for the summer.
William Hunter, who lives
in The Avenue, said: "We get a
lack of respect from students.
I feel the council should have
prosecuted somebody for the
mess. This year, it seems to
be worse than ever."
The meeting debated an
application from Durham
University's University College
for a 2am drinks licence,
to include its student accommodation
at Durham Castle.
Vivian Flowerday, operations
manager for University
College, said: "I think we are
a very responsible licence
holder. We do listen to what
the city says and we have no
intention of making life difficult
for anyone.
"I'm well aware of the
problems students cause to
residents. We have a very
good student bar staff coming
in next year. I'm quite
confident things will improve."
University College already
had a 2am private club-style
drinks licence, but applied
for a pub-style licence.
The City of Durham Trust,
some residents and several
people linked to the university
objected.
Dr A I Doyle, a member of
University College for 56
years, told the meeting residents
were concerned about
increased noise.
"Some people are concerned
about the off-licence
allowing alcohol to be taken
onto Palace Green.
"The application has
alarmed members of the public,"
he said.
Ms Flowerday said the application
did not cover Palace
Green and was a "tidying up"
measure, concerning the college's
commercial trading
during student vacations.
Councillors granted the application.
Coun Maureen
Smith, the committee chair,
urged anyone who experiences
problems to report
them and the licence could be
reviewed.
