TV presenter Pam has suspected swine flu

TELEVISION anchorwoman Pam Royle has suspected swine flu.

Tyne Tees journalist Ms Royle, who has been on holiday to St Lucia with her husband to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, was taken ill at the weekend with flu-like symptoms shortly after they returned from the Caribbean island.

She contacted her doctor, who indicated it could be swine flu and advised her to stay at home in isolation.

Speaking from her home in Middleton St George, near Darlington, last night, Ms Royle told The Northern Echo she was getting better.

She said: “I am still quite ill, but I am a lot better than I was.

“I had flu last winter and I do not think it is any worse than that. It is just typical flulike symptoms.”

Her husband, Mike, said Mrs Royle, the evening news presenter, was in bed, recovering.

He said: “She is still quite poorly.

“Last year, at a big charity event, Pam bought a week’s holiday to St Lucia for our 25th wedding anniversary because that is where we went on our honeymoon.

“We came back on Friday and she was starting to feel a bit unwell. She was poorly all weekend and put herself to bed on Monday.

“I suggested she should go to the doctor as we had been to an area where it is wise to get yourself checked.

“The doctor said ‘This is a very emotive issue at the moment; this swine flu. You’re clearly not well. You must isolate yourself’.

“We are now just waiting to see how she gets on over the next few days.”

He added that the holiday had been an eventful week all round, including an incident when he ended up taking on a thief who snatched a woman’s bag.

He said: “We were sitting in a lovely little beach restaurant cabana one night and there was a lady on her own on the table next to us.

“A young lad, aged about 16, came round the corner, grabbed her handbag and ran off with it. I chased after him, shouting. I did not manage to catch him, but he dropped the bag.

“It was really lucky as she had everything in it – her passport, her travellers’ cheques and her driving licence.”
