HUGE portraits of 100 people will be projected onto the buildings of Durham Market Place as part of a lights festival.
Heart of the City – A Place for the People will take place in Durham City during next month’s Lumiere extravaganza.
The artwork, announced yesterday, will also feature a specially created soundtrack.
Mark Major, director of lighting architects Speirs and Major Associates, who have been commissioned to create the temporary installation, said it was incredibly exciting.
He said: “We want our installation to transform Market Place into a place for the people of Durham and mark the contribution they have made to the city. We’re incredibly excited to be working in Durham as part of Lumiere.”
Dave Bilton, of DGB Events, the event’s associate producer, said: “Speirs and Major Associates are world renowned designers and artists and for them to come to Durham and take part in Lumiere is truly an honour.”
The announcement comes as Durham today submits its outline bid to be named UK City of Culture for 2013.
Lumiere will take place between November 12 and 15.
Residents can nominate people who they think reflect the character of Durham by calling 0207-650-7611 or emailing holly.race@artichoke.uk.com.
