A 3D movie created by Durham scientists has beaten off competition from entertainment giant Disney to win an international prize.
Cosmic Origins, produced by Durham University’s Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC), and School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, won the award for best 3D movie in the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference, held in Silicon Valley, California, US.
It scooped the honour ahead of Disney’s 3D conversion of Sleeping Beauty.
The Durham film tells the history of the universe, from the “cosmic dawn”, when galaxies were first formed, to the present day.
Prof Carlos Frenk, director of the ICC, said: “Cosmic Origins was intended to inspire the viewer with the amazing wonders of the cosmos.
“I knew the movie was great, but I never thought we would beat a Disney production. The differences in budget must be staggering.”
