How you can help the appeal

A VALENTINE’S Day walk is being planned to raise money for the Heart of Durham Appeal.

The three-mile walk around Durham City’s riverbanks is being organised by students from the Durham University Charities Kommittee (Duck), as part of this year’s Duck Week of fundraising events and stunts.

Duck manager Mel Punton said: “This is a great opportunity for us to support a local cause and we want as many local people as possible to sign up for the walk.

Buying a new heart scanner for Durham is a great cause.”

Participants must raise a minimum £10 in sponsorship.

It is hoped up to 80 people will join the walk; with some completing the route tied to each other in a “three-legged race” style.

The walk will begin at Durham Market Place on Sunday, February 14, at 1pm.

There are lots of other ways to support the appeal.

Donations can be left at British Heart Foundation shops or at the cardiac department at University Hospital of North Durham.

Cheques should be made payable to British Heart Foundation. Please write Heart of Durham Appeal on the reverse.

Alternatively, cheques can be posted to Fiona Turner, Little Marsh Farm, Cowpen Bewley, TS23 4HS. To donate by card, call 01623-624558.

Supporters are asked to consider whether their donation would qualify for gift aid.

People can also organise an event – such as a coffee morning or football match – or pick up a collection box for their local hairdresser’s or pub.

To get involved, or to join the Valentine’s Day walk, contact Fiona Turner, Heart of Durham Appeal manager, on 01642-562-162 or 07702- 726-450 or email turnerf@ bhf.org.uk. Students wanting to take part in the walk should call the Duck office on 0191-334-1986 or email duck.charities@dur.ac.uk.
