MARKET traders have bid farewell to two trainee churchmen who have offered a listening ear over the past year.

Andrew Hall and Ian Rutherford, both ordinands at St John’s College, Durham University, have paid regular visits to Durham Indoor Market during the past academic year.

They are due to graduate this summer: Mr Hall in the Church of England and Mr Rutherford as a Methodist Minister.

To say goodbye, traders held a farewell tea for the two, known as the ‘vicars with the snickers’ and the ‘revs with the eggs’.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: "Many thanks to Andrew and Ian for their great contribution to the life and wellbeing of the markets over the last year.

"We are very grateful for their ongoing support and wish the well as they take up their new ministerial positions this summer."

The pair will be succeeded by Susan Hill and Chris Jameson-Gates, from St Nicholas’ Church, and Neil Collin, from St John’s College.
