Man dies after three vehicle smash on B6302 Broom Lane at Ushaw Moor

A MAN has died following a three-vehicle crash on a road near Durham City yesterday.

A police spokesman said the 72-year-old man, from Durham City, died in the early hours of this morning at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he was taken by the air ambulance after the collision yesterday.

The victim, who has not been named, was travelling in a Peugeot 205 car on the B6302 at Broom Lane, Ushaw Moor, just before 9.15am yesterday when his vehicle was involved in a collision with a VW Bora travelling in the opposite direction.

Sergeant Andy Sutherland, of the road policing unit, said the driver of a Seat Leon, travelling east along Broom Lane, had indicated to turn right at a picnic site adjacent to the railway line and stopped prior to making the turn.

An Audi A3 travelling in the same direction came safely to a halt behind the Seat.

The VW Bora collided with the rear of the Audi and travelled head on into the path of the Peugeot.

The 72-year-old driver of the Peugeot, who suffered serious multiple injuries, was airlifted to the RVI.

The 35-year-old man driving the VW Bora suffered a suspected broken ankle and was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham.

The Audi driver, a 45-year-old woman, from Consay Colliery, was uninjured. The Seat Leon driver, a 43-year-old man, from Langley Park , was also uninjured.

The road was reopened shortly after 11.30am.
