'Gord help us' convoy to travel to city

DRIVING instructors and taxi drivers protesting against fuel tax are finalising details for a demonstration travelling from the North-East to Downing Street.

More than 500 vehicles are expected to take part in a protest on Thursday next week - travelling from Gateshead to Sunderland and to the outskirts of Durham City.

A delegation of more than two dozen vehicles will then travel on to London and are expected to me met by more protestors on the way.

The "Gord Help Us" convoy has been organised by the Sunderland Association of Driving Instructors (Sadi).

The demonstration had initially been planned to start in Newcastle and travel through Gateshead and Sunderland before making its way to Durham City.

But Sadi chairman and protest organiser Bert Moncur said this would have caused too much disruption, which was not the intention of the protest.

Instead, drivers will now meet in Dukes Way, Team Valley, at 9am to set off half an hour later. The convoy will travel along the A1 and follow the A1231 to the A19 where it will turn south to join the A690 to Durham.

The protestors will disperse at Carrville with a delegation travelling on to Downing Street with a petition.

Mr Moncur, a Seaham-based driving instructor, has also been in touch with 500 driving schools across the country.

He said: "It will be a peaceful protest, that will stay within the law.

"We will not be having a go slow protest, but will be driving within the speed limit."

The first demonstration organised by Sadi saw 40 cars of driving instructors and taxi drivers take part, gathering at Roker Retail Park before to the Port of Sunderland in Hendon. Two lists of names are being collected, one on the Downing Street website at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ gordhelpusplease and another on www.look4lessons.co.uk.
