Race for Life seeks volunteers
Last year's Race for Life
Last year's Race for Life

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with the smooth running of the North-East's latest Race for Life cancer charity event.

More than 2,600 women are expected to take part in Cancer Research UK's Durham run, at Maiden Castle on Sunday.

It is the third annual staging of the women-only fun run in Durham, and it will be split into morning and afternoon events.

The entry figure is expected to exceed the 2,561 women who took part in the two events round a 5km course at Durham University's Graham Sports Centre last year, raising £140,592 for Cancer Research UK in the process.

Starting guns will go off at 10.30am and 3pm, with organisers hoping the event will raise £195,000.

Holly Howey, Durham's Race for Life events manager, said: "We're delighted so many women have responded to our invitation to join us at Race for Life this year and we hope to have a real party atmosphere on the day.

"The Durham event is always a fantastic experience, with local women coming together to make a positive difference to the lives of people touched by cancer.

"But it's not just the thousands of women who take part in the Durham Race for Life that are important to us - without our volunteers, the event simply wouldn't happen.

"Putting on a Race for Life event is like a major military operation, starting long before the first participants arrive and ending long after the last one crosses the finish line. There are a huge variety of important tasks which need to be done, including helping to set up the 5km course and main event area, marshalling the course, assisting in the information marquee and handing out water, goody bags and medals at the finish."

Any helping hand is welcome, men as well as women, of all ages and abilities and volunteers do not need to know someone taking part in the runs.

Ms Howey said: "We can guarantee volunteers a fun, inspiring and rewarding experience.

"And, they'll also pick-up organisational, communication and fundraising skills, while enabling the thousands of women taking part to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

l Further information on Sunday's event, volunteering and remaining places for the last of the six North-East events, at the Exhibition Park, on Newcastle's Town Moor, on Sunday, July 13, are available on www.raceforlife.org/north, or via the event hotline on 0871-641-2278.
