IT was just as well Durham had Callum Thorp at his most miserly to counter the profligacy of Liam Plunkett as Lancashire reached 136 for five before rain arrived at 3pm.
Thorp had figures of 14.2-6-14-2 and was very unlucky not to remove Shivnarine Chanderpaul with the final ball before the umpires decided to head for the pavilion.
Plunkett’s analysis read 7-0-45-0, suggesting that a mixture of Twenty20 cricket and England Lions duty have sent his improvement into reverse.
Chanderpaul remained unbeaten on 30, but he survived a sharp chance off Paul Collingwood on ten, when an edge flew low to Michael Di Venuto’s right at second slip. He dived to get his right hand to the ball, but it refused to stick.
The West Indian left-hander was also lucky to survive against Thorp, being beaten twice in an over on 22 before shaping to pull the final ball. He skied it just over Steve Harmison at mid-off and collected a single.
Thorp had the one post-lunch success when extra bounce saw Tom Smith caught behind when playing defensively on the back foot.
Luke Sutton contributed 14 to an unbroken stand of 26 with Chanderpaul.
