More rain

DURHAM added 38 runs in 11.4 overs in the afternoon for the loss of Dale Benkenstein before the rain returned with the score on 96 for five.

They still needed 99 more runs to avoid the follow-on, which will be crucial in the battle to avoid defeat.

Jimmy Anderson continued to bowl well, while his England colleague Stuart Broad took eight wickets at Edgbaston as Nottinghamshire swiftly wrapped up an easy win against Warwickshire.

Having significantly narrowed the gap separating them from Nottinghamshire, Durham will see it widened by 17 points to 39 if they fail to pick up any batting points from this match. And that’s assuming they hang on for a draw.

When play resumed after the morning drizzle Benkenstein edged Anderson just short of the slips and the ball went for four.

A thicker edge also flew to the boundary and in Anderson’s next over Benkenstein steered him wide of the slips for another four.

Although generally looking secure, Ben Stokes edged the England bowler at catchable height through the vacant fourth slip position with his score on five.

Anderson and Glen Chapple bowled unchanged for 29 overs until the captain made way for Tom Smith, who struck in his second over.

As Benkenstein had just survived a superb over from Anderson it would be fair to say that Smith reaped the benefit. Generally shaping the ball away, he got one to skid on to pin the batsman lbw for 21.

Phil Mustard drove Smith through mid-on for four and added three more runs before the rain arrived, with Stokes on 13.
