Sunderland draw another blank at the Stadium of Light

SUNDERLAND'S season continues to drift to a tame conclusion after they recorded a second home goalless draw in succession against Wolves.

Seven days after playing out an uneventful 0-0 draw with Spurs, the Black Cats returned to the Stadium of Light and were involved in an equally underwhelming encounter with the side at the bottom of the Premier League.

Sunderland hardly created a chance all afternoon as Wolves recorded their first clean sheet since the third game of the season.

Wayne Hennessey tipped Stephane Sessegnon's first-half shot around the post, while the hosts' best opportunity came to nothing 17 minutes from time when the Wolves goalkeeper saved James McClean's back-post header.

Wolves had created precious little themselves at that stage, but the visitors mounted a strong finish and were the better side in the closing stages.

Steven Fletcher had a goal disallowed after Sylvan Ebanks-Blake fouled Simon Mignolet, and the striker came close again with nine minutes left, only for Mignolet to keep out his close-range header.

SUNDERLAND (4-4-2): Mignolet; Bardsley, Turner, Kilgallon, Richardson; Larsson, Colback, Gardner (Campbell 77), McClean; Sessegnon; Bendtner.

Subs (not used): Westwood (gk), Bridge, Kyrgiakos, Meyler, Vaughan, Ji.

WOLVES (4-4-2): Hennessey; Forde (Jarvis 61), Berra, Stearman, Ward; Foley (Zubar 82), Davis, Henry, Kightly (Edwards 75); Ebanks-Blake, Fletcher.

Subs (not used): De Vries (gk), Johnson, Jonsson, Doyle.

It might have been a bit of a damp squib on Saturday, however I was still expecting a report of the Sunderland game in the South Durham edition of the Northern Echo on Monday morning.

What's the reason for not including a report on the game?

I'm not a very happy reader this morning.
