Mo Farah has won a second Olympic gold medal and a place as one of Britain's greatest athletes with a gutsy victory in the 5,000m final.

Farah, 29, easily the crowd's favourite, sped across the finish line with eyes wide and slapping his shaven head in disbelief before dropping to his knees and kissing the ground.

The crowd erupted when he won the 10,000m last week, and they stood and roared him on all the way as he scored the golden double and a place in history.

Somali-born Farah had stepped out on to the Olympic track for the third time in seven days in the quest to win the 5,000m, a distance at which he is already the world champion.
